Abstract

Using a phenomenological approach, the purpose of the study was to explore experiences of activities of people with mental illness at the independent living center. We conducted face-to-face interviews with 5 individuals with mental illness. Based upon in-depth examination of the experience of activities of people with mental illness, study results were classified with five themes and 11 sub-themes as follows: ¡®I want to hide¡¯(a long time spent in forced hospitalization, just do it passively), ¡®Spring comes to me¡¯(my role model is an activist, get the power from the surrounding words), ¡®Change, another power¡¯(going to be another co-worker, a sense of responsibility and duty), ¡®I am working with the world¡¯(life with a little fun, spreading my story, anything together), ¡®I am going to the future¡¯(the way I should go, dignifiedly lively). Study findings suggest the necessity of action plan centered on people with mental illness, recovery from mental illness, improvement of system for social integration, and revitalization of center for independent living of people with mental illness.
